Frequently asked questions
Booking, payment, pickup, insurance and what to do on the road. The terms and conditions prevail.
Booking and payment
Can I change my reservation?
Yes. Reservations with payment at pickup can be changed or cancelled free of charge with at least 48 hours’ notice, except in unforeseen circumstances.
To change or cancel, call or WhatsApp +351 919 009 092 or email gar105.carrental@gmail.com.
How can I pay?
At pickup: cash, debit card, bank transfer or internationally recognised credit cards such as Visa and Mastercard. American Express, prepaid cards and virtual cards are not accepted.
Online reservations can be paid by credit card, debit card, bank transfer, MB Way, or in cash at pickup. When paying by credit card you may be asked for your PIN at pickup.
I do not have a credit card. Can I rent a car?
Yes. We accept cash, MB Way, debit card, credit card and bank transfer.
With Full Coverage (SCDW), which is included in every online booking, no credit card and no security deposit are required.
Can I get a refund if I cancel?
Yes. Cancel at least 48 hours before pick-up and you get a full refund. After that, or if you do not show up, you get a voucher valid for 18 months. If the cancellation is due to proven force majeure, such as a cancelled flight or severe weather, the refund is always full.
Does the driver have to be the credit card holder?
Yes. The credit card must be in the name of the main driver who signs the rental agreement. An additional driver added to the contract may also drive; the main driver remains responsible for the contract.
How do I get an invoice?
Send your billing details in advance to gar105.carrental@gmail.com. The invoice is issued and emailed at the end of the rental agreement.
Pickup and return
Can I pick up or return the car at any time?
Yes. We deliver and collect 24 hours a day. Out-of-hours fees apply per pickup or return: 20:00 to 21:00 €5; 21:00 to 23:00 €10; 23:00 to 07:00 €25.
For returns booked outside business hours (20:00 to 08:00) there is a 15-minute tolerance; after that, a late fee of €40 applies. For a late pickup or return, contact us in advance on +351 919 009 092.
What is the minimum age?
Drivers must be at least 19 and have held a licence for at least 1 year. Drivers aged 19 to 25 pay the young driver fee of €6 per day. Some categories may have additional restrictions; ask us.
I need to change the return date. How?
You can return the car earlier than planned if you tell us in advance. To keep the car for extra days, contact us in advance on +351 919 009 092 or by email, subject to availability.
Do I return the car with a full tank?
No. Return it with the same fuel level as at delivery. If it comes back with less, we charge a €20 refuelling fee plus the missing litres, at the maximum legal retail price in Madeira on the day of return.
Insurance and coverage
What does Full Coverage mean?
Full Coverage (SCDW) removes your financial responsibility for damage to, or collision involving, the rental car, provided the car was used according to the rental agreement. It also includes Personal Accident Insurance.
With Full Coverage, do I leave a deposit?
No. No credit card and no security deposit. Your excess is reduced to €0 for covered damage; you only provide your details for any incident.
Could I still pay an excess with Full Coverage?
Yes, in these situations: negligence or misuse not related to a road accident (burned or torn seats, broken glove box, damaged switches and similar interior damage); accidents while driving under the influence of alcohol or illegal substances; incorrect refuelling; mechanical damage from improper use, such as driving with a flat tyre or with red warning lights on.
Coverage is only valid if you contact GAR 105 and the police (PSP) and complete the Accident Statement Form (DAF), whatever the extent of the damage. Unreported accidents make the driver responsible for all new damage found at return.
With SCDW the excess is €0. In cases of wilful misconduct or gross negligence (alcohol or drugs, mechanical negligence, wrong fuel, off-road driving) the driver loses the zero excess and is liable for the actual damage; for simple negligence not covered, liability is capped at €1,500.
What is not covered by any insurance?
Breakdown or immobilisation for lack of fuel; engine damage from incorrect refuelling; mechanical damage from driving on unsuitable surfaces (beaches, forest tracks, dirt or rocky roads); interior damage not related to a road accident; damage to or loss of keys and documents; theft of personal belongings from the car; traffic fines and related costs; special cleaning (for example smoke odours); driving under the influence; intentional damage.
On the road
What do I do in case of a breakdown or accident?
For a breakdown or mechanical issue, call GAR 105 on +351 919 009 092 and we will guide you. In an accident, call the emergency services on 112 and tell GAR 105 immediately. The roadside assistance number is in every rental agreement.
What if I get a flat tyre?
Call us first on +351 919 009 092. Then check whether the car has a spare wheel or a repair kit: change the wheel if you can do it safely, or follow the kit’s instructions. All our cars include 24-hour roadside assistance; waiting times depend on where you are.
